Assistant Director of Communication
The communication manager is a newly developed role to lead the strategy and ongoing work of the newly integrated digital and marketing teams at WUWM. We are seeking an assistant director to develop, direct and implement a cohesive, cross-functional communication and audience development strategy for the organization.
The Station -
Recently celebrating 60 years of public service, WUWM 89.7 FM - Milwaukee’s NPR is southeast Wisconsin’s leading public radio station, reaching over 100,000 people a week through our broadcast signal. Over the course of an average month, our content also reaches an additional 200,000 people through non-broadcast channels. Headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, our broadcast signal reaches 13 counties in Southeast Wisconsin, reaching as far north as Sheboygan, west to Madison, and south to Gurnee, IL.
WUWM is a service of University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee (UWM). UWM is Wisconsin’s second-largest university, with a unique dual mission of access and research to provide high-quality education for students from all backgrounds. UWM is one of 146 top research universities recognized as “R1” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The Position -
This position oversees a staff team of four professionals that manage marketing, brand assets, digital distribution, social media, events, community partnerships and volunteer engagement. The role works with the communications team on how to use resources to connect with new and existing audiences, using data to determine distribution of WUWM created content beyond our radio broadcast. As we work to become a multi-platform media organization, a cohesive regional communications strategy and supportive team structure are required.
Responsibilities
Works with the communications team and station leaders to design and execute a regional organizational communication strategy that advances the station’s mission and vision
Design and manage team organizational infrastructure and processes to support communication initiatives
Partners with departments and staff across the organization to identify, support, fund and amplify content and organizational initiatives on WUWMs various traditional and digital platforms
Shapes and advocates for a consistent station narrative for clarity and resonance across our current audience and growing segments
Works with development team to advance funding initiatives that supports content and campaigns
Plans, assigns and guides work amongst the communication team to attract and connect with new and existing audience segments;
Understands and integrates data and audience strategies into the distribution of WUWMs content across all non-broadcast platforms
Tracks and analyzes performance across the core areas to demonstrate impact and inform future strategy
Project manages a diverse array of initiatives with the team, both providing oversight and accountability, while actioning tactical items as needed to support the work, the team and the station
Manages budget and business functions for the unit with the support of the operations team
Supervises, hires, coaches and evaluates the team
Sets clear individual and team goals and holds staff accountable to outcomes
Supports training, professional development and growth for individual team members
Advocates for the team and ensures they have the resources they need to succeed
Serves as a leader and member of the management team that advises, collaborates and communicates across the organization, amplifying and executing consistent, cross-departmental strategies
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Directs and evaluates communications projects, including the design, production, and delivery of internal and external publications
- Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- Develops communications campaigns, programs, and/or projects in alignment with strategic objectives
- May serve as a liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing communications information and representing the interests of the unit
- Assists in the development and implementation of communications focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives
- Assists in the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures to promote communications in alignment with the strategic plan
- May assist with developing and auditing the unit's communications budget
What a candidate will bring:
WUWM is looking for an experienced communications professional, who is detail oriented, an exceptional writer and storyteller, strategic thinker and a strong executer. Ideally, the candidate will bring collaborative leadership skills into the organization both as a supervisor and as a partner with their peers and stakeholders. Comfort with change management and process development is essential.
Required Qualifications:
4+ years work experience in communications, marketing, digital or brand strategy
2+ years of experience supervising professional staff
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated success designing and implementing a data driven digital communications strategy for a media organization
Ability to discuss and consider various audience segments or target markets and how they consume digital content
Experience working in a news organization, public media preferred
Experience identifying and executing successful campaigns to reach and maintain new audience segments
Previous experiences working in a cross-functional, collaborative leadership or project management role
Compensation: Targeted range is between $77,000-$81,000 (Final salary offer contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities as they relate to the
position).
