Description
With Al Tompkins
In this half-day workshop: You will learn how artificial intelligence has taken a giant leap in the last few months that will change the way we all use our phones, computers and smart devices. This leap is called “agentive” A.I. and it is the first iteration of programs that can “think,” not just respond to commands. In this workshop, we will explore agentive A.I. in ways that will help journalists do their jobs. You will see how A.I. programs can help you find sources for your stories, analyze massive data files and make sense of complex legal rulings and scientific and medical studies. You will see how new A.I. programs can create stunningly realistic photos, videos, charts and graphics that will confuse the public when social media trolls use it spread disinformation. The newest A.I. programs will also make it more difficult for journalists to verify videos and photos that drive breaking news. We will explore the ethical implications of A.I. use in journalism and public communication and you will see how some are already deploying A.I. writing, reporting and video editing. The session is front-edge, fast-moving, packed with practical examples that you will find both unsettling and energizing.
